I have weaned myself from google just about entirely, but do want to keep my account for when I need to collaborate with someone who really prefers google. It happens and that’s entirely ok. Also, I still receive email via my gmail address which I get in my email program. I drag incoming email to my digitally sovereign inbox and then reply from there. It’s a gradual process to change or unsubscribe from newsletters and to get people used to using the new address.
Today I got a payment notification for my monthly Google One subscription and realized that there is no need for me to pay for that any more! It’s only 1,99 €/month[1] but why pay google when you don’t have to?
Google makes the process for cancelling the paid subscription surprisingly nerve wracking! It looks like you are actually cancelling your gmail account entirely. But in actual fact, cancelling just reverts you to the free 15GB storage. This is clearly documented in the official google docs.
I took some screenshots to show what it looks like. That last one of the followup email is especially egregious.
fun fact: it’s in euros not dollars because I was living in Germany back in 2019 when I signed up for this ↩︎
