The best choices will meet these criteria:
- obviously active support community without questions being answered
- Source code is available on GitHub or another repository, and is actively being worked on
- Installation documentation is easy to follow, preferably with a docker container option
- updates are frequent and easy to get
- The official website indicates a credible business model or source of enough revenue
- The website and the product itself is fresh, welcoming and user friendly (and does not look dated)
- The product supports 2fa, passkeys and/or supports common sso protocols like openid
- Integrates or interoperates well with software you already use
- Recommended by people you trust
