What is CommunityBridge?
A Privacy Protecting Video Chat, an Alternative to Zoom.
This site is built with WordPress, hosting a video platform that utilizes the powerful BigBlueButton (BBB) technology. We do NOT use AI (Artificial Intelligence) on our site. There is no obligation to become a member. However, you will need an account to create a room. You may log into a chat room as a visitor with an access code, and no account. As a member of CommunityBridge, you have no obligations and may create a dedicated room for video conferencing, which can be accessed through your browser using a link that is easy to remember. CommunityBridge is also a place to learn about privacy and worker-owned cooperatives. There is no need to download or install any software. BBB seamlessly operates within a browser on most devices, ensuring anonymity, convenience, privacy and accessibility for everyone. Is PRIVACY for YOU? You can remain anonymous and take part in our survey.
CommunityBridge offers video calling for privacy minded members. They also use open source for everything including Big Blue Button for video calling. I had come across that in the past but haven’t seen it in a while.
These folks are very much aligned with what we are doing here so I will be reaching out to them. Their description (quoted above) links to a survey about privacy that I will complete. Will report back here and see if they’d like to join here too. I am inspired by the framing of the survey. I grabbed some screenshots for future reference because a copy/paste doesn’t work.
(The form is hosted on nextcloud!
Also a new one for me I have never tried to do that before.)
Thanks @roshanik for letting me know about CommunityBridge. ![]()
With my answers to the written questions:
The most difficult thing about switching from proprietary software to privacy protecting software is:
the other people! the internet is a communication/collaboration tool and if the people you want to communicate/collaborate with don’t care enough and just use big tech it is hard to stop using big tech. also the best privacy protecting software (nice wording, btw) is open source and the best way to use it is to self-host, but that requires some extra linux skills, ssh keys, etc, which is hard for many people.
What is the best way you have found to raise awareness of privacy protection:
Frightening stories and case studies. Someone once told me about how google analyses our photos to learn about us and our interests, for example looking for nike swoosh logos in photos and then showing us ads about nike products.
What incentive would you need to switch to alternative platforms where everyone is protected?
I am already committed and have made it my mission to help privacy-minded people and organizations! I’d love to talk more with you to see if we can help each other and collaborate on making this happen. I am interested in helping with the technical implemention piece. I have already been talking to alot of other likeminded people and it seems momentum is growing! I’ll reach out, but you can learn more about me and connect with me at my Discourse site https://discourse.tobiaseigen.org.
